Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring web content so it gets extracted and cited by answer engines: Featured Snippets, People Also Ask boxes, voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant), and AI chat interfaces (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude). AEO is the 2026 evolution of SEO for the zero-click web.

Why it matters.

Roughly 70 percent of Google searches now end without a click. Users get their answer directly from a Featured Snippet, AI Overview, or knowledge panel without ever visiting a site. This is the surface AEO optimizes for. Where classic SEO competes for the 10 blue links, AEO competes for the *answer block* that appears above them — a fundamentally different content structure.

How it works.

AEO-optimized pages share a recognizable pattern: a direct 40 to 60 word answer in the opening paragraph, FAQ schema with conversational question-form H2 headers, dated content with visible lastmod stamps, tables and numbered lists (which get extracted at 4.2 and 2.7 times the rate of prose respectively, per 2026 NAV43 research), and structured data identifying the answer's author. Search engines parse this structure, extract the answer block, and serve it as the response.

2026 reality check.

AEO is now table stakes. As of May 2026 Google's AI Overview appears in approximately 48 to 60 percent of all searches (BrightEdge / Ahrefs 2026 data). FAQ rich results were officially removed from SERPs on May 7, 2026 — but FAQ schema is still extracted by AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude. Keep the schema. Common mistakes.

Is AEO worth the effort if my Featured Snippet steals my clicks?

Does AEO replace SEO?
