AI Overview is Google's LLM-generated answer card that appears at the top of approximately 48 to 60 percent of search results as of May 2026. Powered by Gemini 3, AI Overview synthesizes information from multiple cited sources into a single response, pushing classic blue-link organic results below the fold.

Why it matters.

AI Overview launched as Search Generative Experience (SGE) in May 2024 and rebranded to AI Overview at general availability. By May 2026 it appears in approximately 48 to 60 percent of all SERPs across 9+ industry verticals (ALM Corp tracking). The percentage is climbing approximately 2-3 points per quarter, on track for 65-80 percent by 2028.

How it works.

Google's Gemini 3 (default for AI Overview as of January 2026) generates an AI Overview by retrieving the top-ranked candidate pages for the user's query, synthesizing a response, and citing the sources it used. Cited URLs appear as small clickable links inside the Overview card. The Overview replaces or pushes down the classic organic results.

2026 reality check.

AI Overview is reshaping the entire SERP. Click-through rates to organic results dropped 61 percent when AI Overview is present (1.76 percent to 0.61 percent average, ClickRank 2026). But brands cited IN the AI Overview earn 35 percent more clicks across all subsequent searches (Search Engine Land 2026). The strategic answer is to be cited, not to fight the format.

Is AI Overview the same as SGE?

Yes. SGE (Search Generative Experience) was the beta name from May 2024 launch through 2025. Google rebranded to AI Overview at general availability. Same feature, different name.

How can I tell if my page is cited in an AI Overview?

Search Console attributes AI Overview citations as position 1 in your impression data. Manually, search the query in Google and look at the AI Overview's source citations. Tools like Profound (tryprofound.com) and Discovered Labs track AI Overview citation share programmatically.

Can I opt out of AI Overview?

Not directly. Google-Extended in robots.txt blocks Gemini training but does not affect AI Overview retrieval (which uses the regular Google index). Some pages can be excluded via noindex but that also blocks classic SERP indexing.

Does AI Overview kill SEO?

It changes SEO. Classic 10-blue-links optimization still matters but is no longer the only surface. The new strategy is to be cited in the AI Overview while also maintaining classic ranking. Brands that are cited gain compounding brand-search lift even as direct CTR falls.
