LLM Citation
LLM citation is the practice of being attributed as a source in responses from large language model (LLM) interfaces — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot. Citation appears as a clickable link in the AI response, attributing the information to the source URL.

Why it matters.
LLM citation is the 2026 visibility currency. Where SEO measures rank, GEO measures citation share. As of March 2026 research, the first cited source in an LLM response captures over 60 percent of the citation click share (AuthorityTech analysis). The first 30 percent of a page's text contains 44 percent of all citations extracted by ChatGPT (Upgrowth 2026 study). Position within a page matters as much as position within the SERP.
How it works.
Each LLM has its own citation algorithm but the major signals overlap: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) fetches candidate pages from the engine's index, an extractor LLM identifies the most quotable / answerable passages, a citation layer attributes those passages to source URLs. Authority signals (DR80+ domains for ChatGPT, Reddit and Q&A communities for Perplexity, credentialed authors for Claude) gate which pages even enter the candidate set.
2026 reality check.
Earned media accounts for 25 percent of all LLM citations as of March 2026 (GlobeNewswire research). Press releases distributed via GlobeNewswire (61 percent of cited PR), PR Newswire (27 percent), and Business Wire (12 percent) get cited disproportionately. Reddit dominated Perplexity citations at 46 percent until the October 2025 lawsuit dropped that to ~7 percent. YouTube absorbed the gap.
Data points
- First cited source captures >60% of citation click share (AuthorityTech 2026 analysis)
- First 30% of page text contains 44% of all citations (Upgrowth 2026 LLM citation algorithm research)
- Earned media drives 25% of all LLM citations (GlobeNewswire research March 2026)
- Tables cited 4.2x more often than equivalent prose, lists 2.7x (NAV43 2026 study)
- Claude cites author-attributed Article schema at 94% confidence vs 61% for plain text (Oltre.ai 2026)
- Only 11% of domains cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity for same prompt (Pravin Kumar 2026)
First-hand insight from ThatDeveloperGuy.
ThatDeveloperGuy tracks LLM citation across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude for ~30 client-relevant queries weekly. Our Person schema with sameAs to Wikidata Q139901957 and Google KG MID /g/11n57xh708 produced measurable citation lift on Claude specifically — Joseph's name appears as a cited author for AEO-related queries within 60 days of the entity wiring deployment. Author entity is the single most leveraged Claude citation signal in our testing.
How TDG approaches it
Every TDG page is structured for citation extraction: 40-60 word self-contained answer at top (cited 3.1x more than longer passages), tables for any data presentation (4.2x citation lift), question-form H2 headers (match retrieval query phrasing), full Person + Organization + Article schema with author sameAs (94% Claude confidence vs 61% for plain text), maintained dateModified (sub-30-day = 2.3x citation multiplier).
Common mistakes.
- Writing for keyword density instead of self-contained 40-75 word quotable answer blocks
- Missing author entity (Person schema with sameAs) — Claude citation drops from 94% to 61% confidence
- Skipping tables and numbered lists — tables cited 4.2x more often than equivalent prose
- Stale content — citations drop sharply after 90 days for ChatGPT, ~10 weeks for Claude, even faster for Perplexity
- Hoping to be cited without third-party authority signals — 85% of AI brand mentions come from third-party pages
FAQ.
How do I check if my site is cited by ChatGPT?
Open ChatGPT and search the queries your buyers would type. Cited sources appear as clickable links in the response. For programmatic tracking: Profound (tryprofound.com), Discovered Labs, Otterly. Manual sampling weekly is enough for most small businesses.
Why does my site appear in Google but not in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT's index is updated less frequently than Google's. Also, ChatGPT favors DR80+ authority domains and pages with verified author entities. If your site lacks Wikipedia presence, third-party press, or named-author schema, it won't be cited even with strong Google rankings.
Can I pay for LLM citation?
No. LLM citations are algorithmic, not advertising. There is no paid placement equivalent to Google Ads. Authority signals (Wikipedia, press, reviews, GitHub presence) are earned, not bought (though press release distribution costs ~$350-450 per drop).
Which LLM cites the most diverse sources?
Perplexity cites the most sources per response (3x more than ChatGPT) and pulls from the widest domain pool. ChatGPT is the most authority-concentrated (Wikipedia + Reddit + Forbes-tier publications). Claude favors credentialed practitioner content.
What's the fastest way to start getting cited?
Publish a named methodology with you as named author (Person schema + sameAs chain). Get one Wikipedia article that survives speedy deletion (requires 3+ independent reliable sources). Run one quarterly press release through GlobeNewswire. Maintain quarterly content refresh.
